UN has recorded more than 1,000 assaults carried out by Israeli
civilians against Palestinians and their property, in dozens of
locations across the West Bank. 11 Palestinians were killed during those
attacks while trying to protect their homes, flocks of sheep, fields
and groves, either at the hands of soldiers or the attacking civilians.

A good historian always examines his conclusions. If he comes to the
conclusion that things he wrote previously require a reassessment, he is
obligated to face that. But a historian who, at the start of his
career, determined that Israel is responsible for the mass flight of the
Palestinians in 1948 and later changed his views until he became the
darling of the settler right, is a pathetic phenomenon. Benny Morris has
followed that path.
He has betrayed two key duties of the historian: to be open-minded
and recognize the extensive research literature that directly relates to
his own areas of research; and not to distort his own previous
conclusions due to current political insights. [Morris’ “Israel conducted no ethnic cleansing in 1948,” Haaretz, October 10, was in response to Daniel Blatman’s “Netanyahu, this Is what ethnic cleansing really looks like,” Haaretz, October 3.]
On March 10, 1948, the national Haganah headquarters approved Plan
Dalet, which discussed the intention of expelling as many Arabs as
possible from the territory of the future Jewish state. Morris wrote
about it in his book “1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War”
(2010). He stated that the plan aroused a historiographical dispute,
with pro-Palestinian historians claiming it was a master plan for
expelling the Arabs living in Israel. He claimed that a careful
examination of the plan’s wording leads to a different conclusion.
Whose different conclusion? That of scholars who are experts on
ethnic cleansing? Or legal experts who grappled with the problem? No,
that of Morris, of course. He does not accept the definition of ethnic
cleansing that was carried out by the Jews in 1948. Perhaps there was a
“mini” ethnic cleansing in Lod and Ramle. Perhaps some marginal massacre
(Deir Yassin), which caused the panicked flight of Palestinians.
The problem is that these are precisely the circumstances that lead
to ethnic cleansing. Had Morris bothered to properly study the documents
of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, he
would understand why his statements would be considered absurd at any
serious scientific conference.
The following was stated by the prosecutor in the trial of Radovan
Karadzic, the Bosnian-Serb leader who was convicted of responsibility
for the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Bosnia: “In ethnic cleansing ...
you act in such a way that in a given territory, the members of a given
ethnic group are eliminated. ... You have massacres. Everybody is not
massacred, but you have massacres in order to scare those populations.
... Naturally, the other people are driven away. They are afraid ...
and, of course, in the end these people simply want to leave. ... They
are driven away either on their own initiative or they are deported. ...
Some women are raped and, furthermore, often times what you have is the
destruction of the monuments which marked the presence of a given
population ... for instance, Catholic churches or mosques are
destroyed.”
Exactly as in 1948: Implied instructions, silent understandings,
sowing fear among the population whose flight is the objective; the
destruction of the physical presence left behind. In his first book on
the subject, “The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949”
(1989 in English), Morris wrote: “The attacks of the Haganah and the
Israel Defense Forces, expulsion orders, the fear of attacks and acts of
cruelty on the part of the Jews, the absence of assistance from the
Arab world and the Arab Higher Committee, the sense of helplessness and
abandonment, orders by Arab institutions and commanders to leave and
evacuate, in most cases was the direct and decisive reason for the
flight – an attack by the Haganah, Irgun, Lehi or the IDF, or the
inhabitants’ fear of such an attack.”
About 15 years ago, however, Morris changed his mind. In his book
“Correcting a Mistake: Jews and Arabs in Palestine/Israel, 1936-1956”
(2000), he stated: “The majority of the abandonments [by the
Palestinians] from most of the places, most of the time I attributed to
attacks by Jewish forces. Sometimes a historian has to correct a
mistake.” Hats off to a historian who admits an error. But Morris’
professional integrity is tested in light of what he told Ari Shavit
(Haaretz, January 2004): “I don’t think that the expulsions of 1948 were
war crimes. I think he [Ben-Gurion] made a serious historical mistake
in 1948 he got cold feet during the war. In the end, he faltered. If he
was already engaged in expulsion, maybe he should have done a complete
job.”
At the same time, Morris argues that Ben-Gurion “never gave an order
to expel the Arabs.” Indeed, no such written order has been found. And
the reader will wonder: So there was an order to expel, or perhaps
expulsion without an order? Or perhaps there was a mass expulsion, but
it was incomplete so therefore it’s not ethnic cleansing? And does
Morris regret the fact that no order was given to complete the ethnic
cleansing? Morris is fortunate that he doesn’t engage in Holocaust
research. He might have been capable of claiming that it wasn’t Hitler
who ordered the “Final Solution,” since, as we know, no written order by
him to murder European Jewry was ever found.
The expulsions were not war crimes, says Morris, because it was the
Arabs who started the war. In other words, hundreds of thousands of
innocent civilians who belong to the side that began the fighting have
to be expelled. Maybe Morris would agree that the genocide carried out
by the Germans against the Herero in 1904-1908 was justified since,
after all, the Herero began the rebellion against German colonialism in
Namibia.
Morris is right about one thing: The understandings that the Arabs
should be expelled were not carried out in full. There were commanders
who obeyed to the letter; there were others who didn’t. That’s exactly
why some 160,000 Arabs remained inside the State of Israel in 1949. Just
as tens of thousands of Armenians remained in Turkey after World War I,
because there were government officials who didn’t carry out orders to
the letter to expel or murder them. Fortunately, in 1948 there were IDF
commanders who refrained from doing what they knew they could do without
being held to account. If it weren’t for them, the war crime committed
by Israel would have been even greater.

"I eit israelsk regjeringsdokument blir det føreslått å overføra heile
sivilbefolkninga på Gazastripa til Sinaihalvøya i Egypt i samband med
krigen.
Dokumentet er utarbeidd av Israels etterretningsdepartement. Etter at
det vart kjent, har kontoret til statsminister Benjamin Netanyahu prøvd
å tona ned innhaldet, samtstundes som det har forverra forholdet mellom
Israel og Egypt og ført til sterk fordømming frå palestinsk hald.

Dette er skremmende lesning. Etnisk rensing av hele befolkningen på Gazastripen. Som en mulig israelsk plan ...
Og dette skjer i virkeligheten på områder ved Hebron på Vestbredden. Der truer kriminelle bosettere flere palestinske landsbyer til å flytte for godt. Og dette skjer med våpen i hånd, mens IDF ser på:

What to the sane majority in Israel is the greatest catastrophe in its
history, is to the settlers an opportunity to chase Palestinians from
their land and take it over. Hagar Shezaf exposed (Haaretz, Oct. 15,)
that a wave of flight has begun since the outbreak of the war, by
Palestinians belonging to shepherd communities in the West Bank, due to
settler violence.
In some cases the locales have been completely depopulated, and in
others some of the families have left, or women and children have been
evacuated. The residents report threats by settlers, at times armed,
ordering them to leave. This is not an isolated incident, but a broad campaign,
taking place under the auspices of the government of the right-wing and
the settlers, and that now, under cover of the war, has gained immense
momentum. According to the UN’s office for humanitarian aid coordination
report published in September, 1,105 shepherds – some 12.5 percent of
this population – have left their homes in the West Bank over the past
year.
Most of the residents of Ein Shibli in the Jordan Valley have fled in
recent days. According to the residents and Israeli activists
accompanying them, a settler named Moshe Sharvit, who lives in a nearby
outpost, gave them five hours to clear out. All the residents of Wadi a-Siq in
the central West Bank did so. The community, numbering some 20
families, fled for their lives from where it lived due to repeated
harassment by settlers. The 100 people who had remained fled on
Thursday. “We didn’t leave, we escaped,” said one of the residents. “On
Thursday they came and attacked us.”
Farasiya in the northern Jordan Valley also reported threats. A local
resident said that five settlers came to them on Saturday night and told
them that they must leave. “They were armed, and they hit children in
the legs with their weapons,” he said. The residents say the Israeli
police and civil administration don’t help them.
Not only expulsion is flourishing under the roar of guns in the south.
The number of fatalities in the West Bank has also soared to an
extraordinary degree. According to Palestinian Health Ministry data, 58 Palestinians were killed in the past week. According to the security establishment, about 10 of them were shot to death by settlers.
What is happening in the territories calls
for military intervention and governmental attention. This time it isn’t
“just” deepening the annexation and apartheid. Against the backdrop of
the war in Gaza, the settlers’ crimes may push the Palestinians in the
West Bank to violence, and bring about the opening of another front,
which will make it difficult for the IDF to defend the country. The fact
that the military and government allow these crimes to take place
during wartime is itself a crime and a security failure. Unlike the
failures that brought the current disaster upon Israel, this one can be
stopped. The question is whether a government populated by settler
representatives, who dream of Nakba 2.0 – or worse – is interested in, and capable of, enforcing limits upon these people.

Israel's Fingerprints Are All Over the Ethnic Cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh

The Armenians fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh en
masse still remember the first years after the Soviet Union fell apart,
when their community suffered war and mass slaughter. But they also
remember the more distant history of the genocide perpetrated against
their countrymen by the Ottoman Empire. Consequently, they are rightly
unwilling to rely on the mercy of the Azeri security services, who in
recent years haven’t hesitated to attack Armenian civilians and civilian
targets and commit war crimes in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Starting in the second decade of the 21st century, Israel has been helping Azerbaijan commit war crimes and
defeat the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Israel has a strategic
relationship with the Azeris that includes arms deals worth billions of
dollars, stemming from both Israel’s war against Iran and the fact that
it buys a significant portion of the oil it needs from Azerbaijan.
In the past, security ties between the two countries remained discreet. But in recent years, Azerbaijan has proudly displayed advanced Israeli weaponry,
including missiles and suicide drones, in its military parades. It has
also revealed that a factory that produces Israeli suicide drones exists
on Azeri soil, and it has once again released official videos in which
its forces are seen using Israeli weapons.
On
March 6, Haaretz reported that over the past seven years, 92 Azeri
cargo planes landed at the Ovda airbase – the only airfield from which
explosives can be exported. In addition, an Israeli suicide drone has
been documented attacking an antitank battery in Armenia itself
(Haaretz, March 15, 2021). Haaretz also reported that Azeri journalists and opposition activists have been targeted for surveillance with NSO’s Pegasus spyware (May 25, 2023).

Throughout this period, Israel hasn’t just supplied Azerbaijan with
arms. It has also helped it distort history. During legal proceedings in
2020, the Foreign Ministry admitted that Israel’s refusal to recognize the Armenian genocide
– which it defines merely as a “tragedy” – stems in part from its
relationship with the Azeri government. At the same time, Israel is also
assisting Azerbaijan’s campaign for international recognition of the
“Khojaly genocide,” which the Armenians allegedly perpetrated against
the Azeris. Admittedly, there are conflicting stories about what
happened in the battle of Khojaly during the first Nagorno-Karabakh war
of 1992. But there’s one thing the international community agrees on
regarding this issue – no genocide took place there, according to the
accepted definition of the term.
What is happening in Nagorno-Karabakh isn’t
the first case of ethnic cleansing that has Israel’s fingerprints on
it. The persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar and
the Muslims during the Bosnian War are just two examples out of many.
Israel ought to have from the Jewish people’s own history that when you
mix massive amounts of weaponry with a distortion of history, it’s a
recipe for disaster.
