Israel Used to Cover Up the War Crimes It Committed. Not Today

The filmmaker Ram Loevy, who died this week, spent much of his life pursuing an off-screen mission: exposing one of the gravest war crimes in the history of the Israel Defense Forces

In the summer of 2000, an Egyptian bulldozer uncovered a mass grave in Ras Sudr containing 52 bodies – the forensic evidence that confirmed the soldiers' testimonies. Loevi directed a semi-fictional series called "Retzach, Metzalmim" ("Murder, We're Filming") about the event, but the walls of silence did not crack. Haaretz journalist Avichai Becker followed in his footsteps and interviewed the reserve soldiers from Ras Sudr, including the company commander who had ordered the murders. The censor blocked it.

"'We Give Them 48 Hours to Leave': Israel's Plans to Transfer Gazans Go Back 60 Years

In the 1960s and 1970s, left-wing governments of Israel proposed plans to 'thin' the population of the Gaza Strip. A perusal of the minutes of meetings reveals that their ideas don't differ much from those of today's far-right government.

"Diluting the population," "evacuating homes," "expulsion," "exile," "emptying" and even "transfer." A broad array of words was used by Israeli government ministers during the historic deliberations in the 1960s and 1970s about the future of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

A perusal of the minutes in the Israel State Archives indicates that the present aspiration of the far right to "encourage emigration" of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip only echoes ideas and proposals that came up for discussion in the past – by prime ministers, ministers and leaders in left-wing governments, who were among the country's founding fathers."
