"What Simon told Haaretz 50 years ago is still very much relevant today. He warned against the growing emphasis on national aspects of Judaism at the expense of its more universal dimensions and against those who believe Jews are the Chosen People while forgetting that all human beings are created in the image of God. He also warned against placing too much weight on the sanctity of the land at the expense of "basic moral considerations."
"A country that is always forced to live by the sword can't be a Jewish state, because militarism, isolation, self-righteousness and arrogance will corrupt it from within," he told Haaretz.
"Seeking peace and pursuing it is not a good piece of advice but a commandment, just like the duty to shun evil and do good," he wrote. "The blessings of peace are many, but the primary motivation for seeking peace and striving to achieve it should not be pragmatic, but moral."
