"Ex-cops Came to 'Defend' Their Town From Arabs, and Ended Up Stopping a Jewish Mob"

Artikkel i Haaretz 27. mai 2021:
"Ex-cops Came to 'Defend' Their Town From Arabs, and Ended Up Stopping a Jewish Mob"

“The police did not help us – they shouted at us, but we protected him until the ambulance arrived,” said Shlomi."

A., a young Arab man hailing from Jisr al-Zarqa, who was beaten and stabbed by some 20 people with clubs, Israeli flags and knives in Or Akiva, this month

Guy and Shlomi Salma, brothers and former policemen from Or Akiva, arrived on the evening of May 12 at a gas station just outside the town. Guy said the idea was to establish a presence there in response to reports of Arabs in the area rioting. “We genuinely came there to defend the town,” he said.

But when the two arrived, they found an angry Jewish mob. “Suddenly, I’m hearing, ‘An Arab, an Arab,’” Guy recalled. “I saw an Arab coming on foot alone and approaching the mob. It was clear he was innocent, not connected with the situation at all.”

The Arab was A., a young resident of the nearby town of Jisr al-Zarqa, who was beaten and stabbed by some 20 people with clubs, Israeli flags and knives. Guy and Shlomi defended A. with their bodies, escorted him away from the mob and stayed with him until an ambulance arrived.

After Gaza, an Israeli-Palestinian struggle for identity: Aluf Benn, Noa Landau and Anshel Pfeffer

It wasn’t the only such attack that evening, but the case of A. was unusual because Jews intervened to help him.

“We were standing off on the side and saw that the mob was running toward someone. We didn’t know who he was, but very quickly realized that he was an innocent bystander,” said Shlomi. “There was no reason to attack him. Immediately, we ran over to rescue him, all the while, we were hit and cursed” by the mob.

A video of the incident shows Guy standing over A., who is injured and lying on the ground, as Shlomi tries to keep the attackers at bay. After a few seconds, the police start throwing stun grenades, causing the mob to disperse, but also injuring the brothers. Shlomi sustained a leg injury and Guy an injury to his forehead.

Warning: This video contains graphic footage and may be upsetting to some viewers.

“The police did not help us – they shouted at us, but we protected him until the ambulance arrived,” said Shlomi. “I’m angry at whoever the commander was on the scene for using stun grenades.”

The two said that the mob grew angry at them for defending A. “They shouted at us, ‘Leftists. What are you protecting him for? He’s an Arab.’ But Guy took care of him, and I made sure that whole time that they couldn’t get near him,” Shlomi recalled. “I’m definitely not a leftist, but you don’t hurt a person who hasn’t hurt you. A person is a person.”

Guy added that by assisting A. he felt that he had also helped the Jews who were there. “I believe that I saved these young people who had attacked him from being sent to prison for murder. I saved them, too. One more stabbing and the man would have died.”

Nevertheless, Guy said he believes that the young men “had come with good intentions, to protect the town, but ended up getting caught up in the situation.”

After the incident, he himself went to the hospital to see A. again. “He cried to me,” Guy said. “He told me I had saved his life. From my perspective, I did what I needed to do and my conscience is clear.”

According to the police, A. was hospitalized in serious condition with head injuries, and was released after several days after his condition improved.

Shlomi said that so far the police have not made contact with him. Guy said that investigators had reached out to him for his testimony and for his help to identify the attackers. But he said he had no intention of cooperating.

“First of all because I won’t recognize anyone and, secondly, I did what I did, and I don’t need to get any credit for it,” Guy explained.

But, he added, he also fears what might happen if he did identify any of the attackers. “I don’t intend to give more than that – they can do the work themselves. If I testify against anyone, I could end up in a feud with people in town. The police only want your evidence; after that, they don’t care about you,” he explained.

On Wednesday, the only person arrested to date for his involvement in the attack was indicted. Roman Levitan, age 34 from Hadera, was charged with an aggravated act of terror and unlawful possession of a knife – crimes punishable by up to 25 years in prison. The indictment alleges that Levitan beat A. on the head with a rod, out of “nationalistic-ideological motives.”

According to the indictment, about 20 rioters spotted the young Arab man as he passed by and attacked him as a group. However, except for Levitan, no other suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

As for Levitan, he told police that “while I was fighting with a rod there, if I did hit that kid, it wasn’t because I was aiming at him. It happened because everything was chaotic, not because he was an Arab or something like that.”

The police’s version of that evening differs from the brothers’ account. “Police and Border Police were responding to and coping with a multitude of arenas to provide an optimal response to incidents happening in so many places,” the Israel Police said in a statement.

“In stark contrast to what is being alleged, the police arrived at the scene immediately after they saw that an attack was occurring and protected the victim until an ambulance arrived. During the attack, police officers arrested several of those involved, including one suspect who attacked with a crowbar and a knife. Police action prevented further incidents and harm to passersby.”

Patrick Kinsley i NY Times 15. mai 2021:
"After Years of Quiet, Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Exploded. Why Now?"

"Patrick Kingsley is the Jerusalem bureau chief, covering Israel and the occupied territories. He has reported from more than 40 countries, written two books and previously covered migration and the Middle East for The Guardian."

Michael Melchior i VG 14. mai 2021:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaking to the press in Tel Aviv earlier today.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaking to the press in Tel Aviv earlier today.Hadas Parush

How are things here, you ask. Things here are past insane.

Over the border in Gaza, families are farming out their children, separately, to other families, so that if one of our highly explosive “smart” bombs demolishes a house they happen to be in, not all of their children will be killed.

On our side of the border, where Hamas has rained rockets on communities Benjamin Netanyahu cannot be bothered to care about, and hasn’t cared about for the eternity in which he has held office, some families have begun doing the same thing.

The whole nation of Israel knew we’d lost the war the night it started. When the rockets reached Tel Aviv, something very powerful shattered to shards. It was Israel itself.

Everyone knew it at once. Some Israelis hated the idea, others saw it as a blessing in disguise. After all, even if Israel had already lost the war, even if parallel lynch mobs of Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jews were out for rival blood; even if in Israel synagogues were torched and a Muslim cemetery desecrated and sacred texts firebombed to ash, Netanyahu’s death grip on power had been rescued. By Hamas. And by the Jewish scumbag fascist supporters of terror whom Netanyahu had spent recent months coddling and courting and campaigning for.

A Palestinian family fleeing their home in Gaza City yesterday.Hatem Moussa/AP

And not for the first time.

After all, it was the toxic cocktail of Jewish terror and Hamas violence that first brought Netanyahu to power more than a quarter of a century ago. The fervently right-wing Israeli who gunned down Yitzhak Rabin, followed by a shocking spate of Hamas suicide bombings of public buses in major Israeli cities, paved Bibi’s come-from-far-behind electoral path to Balfour Street.

That’s how Netanyahu likes his public. Shattered. Furious. Fearful. Paralyzed.

I don’t want to live one more day in Netanyahu’s Israel.

He just came on television, standing there with his campaign smirk and his smug, self-adoring bellow, a warplane furnishing his background prop. “They’ve sustained blows they did not expect,” he crowed. “And I have no doubt that we’ve sent them backward a good many years!”

The Big Fool says to push on.

For years and years and years, all that Netanyahu wanted us to hear was Iran, Iran, Iran.

Now we know why.

The only thing he was really good at was taking Israel apart from the inside. It wasn’t just starving the health care system, the schools, the social nets. It wasn’t just acquiescing to every whim of his vital-vote ultra-Orthodox supporters, even to the point of calling off the police and turning a blind eye to abjectly dangerous actions that resulted in Haredi deaths.

He had other plans, more pressing concerns. He was grooming us, all of us – including those of us who hate him – to keep him in charge.

Along the way, he’s been terrifying and privatizing and molding Israel’s news media into submission, into exactly what he needs. So that people here wouldn’t, couldn’t, see what he’s actually gotten away with. Any more than people here can see what we’re actually doing in Gaza. To Gaza. To human beings. To children.

A Palestinian father checking on his daughter at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City today, after his wife and other children were killed in an Israeli airstrike.
A Palestinian father checking on his daughter at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City today, after his wife and other children were killed in an Israeli airstrike.MAHMUD HAMS - AFP

What we do know is that he’s done to the shaky, defective constructs of democracy in Israel precisely what he has done, yet again, to Gaza. He knocked on the roof with a brief warning, then he brought it all down.

The minority that votes for him – at this point a minority is all he needs to stay in power forever – sees all this as a good thing.

He raises up vicious, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, Kahanist gang leaders to the status of partners in government? Grants them immunity from the law? Sure, why not. Israel loses, but what counts is that Bibi wins.

Denigrate and delegitimize non-Jewish Israelis and treat them as steerage-class citizens? Undermine all nonviolent Palestinian activism in the West Bank, while finding inventive ways to shore up and bribe the Hamas regime in Gaza? Promise security but leave millions of Israelis without access to bomb shelters? All in a day’s work.

Pulverize a building housing foreign media outlets? A masterstroke. A Bibist fantasy realized. Bibi has groomed us well. The media is the enemy, treacherous, leftist, anti-Zionist. Bring it all down.

One more thing. Turn Likud into an increasingly dictatorial political force, in some ways a version and, yes, a partner of Hamas? I don’t want one more day of it. Not it and not him.

Those first days of this war, when I saw the images of children killed in this war that Netanyahu could have avoided altogether, I had no words. But now I do. Five.

Fuck Hamas. And fuck Bibi.

"Ben-Gurion’s Uncensored Diary Revealed: 'Pester and Motivate the Refugees to Move Eastward'"

"David Ben-Gurion's journals, written between 1948 and 1953, expose many secrets: having Mizrahi Jews surveilled, trying to get Palestinian refugees to leave and detailing rapes committed by soldiers are just a few of them."

.................................

"Pester" .... and "Motivate them to move eastward".

"Pester and Motivate".

I krig dør sannheten først - Det sørger Netanyahus talsmann for

Men i krig dør sannheten først.

"In a 28-second video, which was posted to Twitter this week by a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip appeared to launch rocket attacks at Israelis from densely populated civilian areas.
At least that is what Mr. Netanyahu’s spokesman, Ofir Gendelman, said the video portrayed. But his tweet with the footage, which was shared hundreds of times as the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis escalated, was not from Gaza. It was not even from this week."

Og mer desinformasjon  fra Ofir Gendelman:
NY Times:
" Mr. Gendelman appears to have mischaracterized the contents of other videos as well. On Tuesday, he posted a video on Twitter showing three adult men being instructed to lie down on the floor, with their bodies being arranged by a crowd nearby. Mr. Gendelman said the video showed Palestinians staging bodies for a photo opportunity.

Mr. Kovler, who traced the video back to its source, said the video had been posted in March to TikTok. Its accompanying text said the footage showed people practicing for a bomb drill."

....................

- Ikke fra denne konflikten.
- Ikke fra denne uken.

 Desinformasjon fra Netanyahus talsmann.

Bør han skiftes ut?
Blir nestemann bedre?

Sheikh Jarrah i Øst-Jerusalem: Sakte etnisk rensing pågår
